Customs Clearance

The process of submitting documentation and paying duties to import goods into a country, required before shipment is released to the buyer.

Customs clearance is the mandatory process of submitting documentation and paying applicable duties to import goods into a country, which must be completed before a shipment is officially released to the buyer. This process involves presenting commercial invoices, packing lists, certificates of origin, and other required documents to customs authorities who verify the shipment's contents, assess tariffs, and ensure compliance with import regulations. Until customs clearance is successfully completed, goods remain in a bonded warehouse or customs-controlled area and cannot be delivered to their final destination.

Why it matters for e-commerce brands

For Shopify and DTC merchants selling internationally, customs clearance directly impacts delivery times, landed costs, and customer satisfaction. Delays in customs clearance can result in frustrated customers, abandoned orders, and negative reviews, while unexpected duties and taxes can erode profit margins or create surprise charges that damage the customer experience. Brands must decide whether to use DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) terms where they handle all customs costs upfront, or DDU (Delivered Duty Unpaid) where customers pay upon delivery, each approach affecting conversion rates and customer trust differently.

Example

A Shopify clothing brand based in Los Angeles ships an order of three dresses valued at $200 to a customer in Germany. Before the package can be delivered, it must go through German customs clearance where the shipping carrier or customs broker submits a commercial invoice, packing list, and certificate of origin. German customs authorities assess the shipment and determine it owes 12% duty plus 19% VAT based on the declared value. Once these fees are paid—either by the brand if using DDP shipping, or collected from the customer upon delivery if using DDU—customs releases the package for final delivery to the customer's address.
