Cycle Stock

Cycle stock is the portion of inventory that is regularly consumed and replenished as part of normal ordering cycles, excluding safety stock. It represents the average amount of inventory needed to meet expected customer demand between replenishment orders. This inventory component fluctuates predictably, decreasing as products are sold and increasing when new shipments arrive from suppliers.
Why it matters for e-commerce brands
For Shopify and DTC merchants, properly calculating cycle stock is essential for maintaining efficient inventory levels without tying up excessive capital in storage. Getting cycle stock right means you can fulfill orders consistently while minimizing warehouse costs and reducing the risk of products becoming obsolete or expiring. This is particularly important for e-commerce brands with limited cash flow or those selling seasonal or trend-driven products where overstock can quickly become a liability.
Example
A Shopify store selling organic skincare products sells an average of 300 units of facial moisturizer per month and reorders from their manufacturer every two weeks. Their cycle stock would be approximately 150 units (half the monthly demand), which gradually depletes from 150 to near zero over the two-week period before the next shipment arrives. This doesn't include the additional 50 units they keep as safety stock for unexpected demand spikes. By accurately forecasting this cycle stock need, they can place orders of the right size to keep products available without overstocking and risking expiration of their organic ingredients.
