Pick, Pack, and Ship
The warehouse fulfillment process of selecting items from storage (pick), packaging them (pack), and handing them to a carrier for delivery (ship).
Pick, pack, and ship is the core warehouse fulfillment process that involves three sequential steps: selecting ordered items from inventory locations (pick), securely packaging them for transit (pack), and transferring them to a shipping carrier for delivery to the customer (ship). This process represents the physical execution of customer orders and is fundamental to e-commerce operations. Each step must be performed efficiently and accurately to ensure customers receive the correct products in good condition and on time.
Why it matters for e-commerce brands
For Shopify and DTC brands, pick, pack, and ship operations directly impact customer satisfaction, shipping costs, and operational efficiency. Fast and accurate fulfillment leads to positive reviews and repeat purchases, while errors or delays can damage brand reputation and increase return rates. Optimizing this process—whether handled in-house or through a third-party logistics provider (3PL)—is essential for scaling an e-commerce business and maintaining competitive delivery times.
Example
When a customer orders a water bottle and t-shirt from a Shopify store, the warehouse receives the order electronically. A picker walks through the warehouse with a picking list or handheld scanner, locating the water bottle in bin A-23 and the t-shirt in bin C-47 (pick). The items are brought to a packing station where they're placed in an appropriately sized box with protective packaging materials and a shipping label is printed and applied (pack). Finally, the sealed package is placed in the designated area for the chosen carrier—such as UPS or USPS—who collects it for delivery to the customer's address (ship).
